Favorite Holiday Sale So Far...

Tis the season for sales. Lots of sales. Black Friday brought some great deals and my favorite was not actually a sale at all and reminded me why I LOVE this brand so much. Everlane is an online retailer who not only sells amazing, high quality basics for a fraction of what you are probably paying (think t-shirts, basic silks, small leather goods...) but also stresses transparency with the factories they use, production costs and markups.

The morning of Black Friday I opened up my email to find this note...

They not only reached their goal, but blew through it. Pretty cool a recreation area for the workers in Hangzhou, China will be built with this Black Friday event. To cheers Everlane and their amazing holiday shopping kickoff, here are a few of my favorite picks from their Winter 2014 collection.

Mother's Day Edition

Mother's Day is coming up (quickly, as in this Sunday). If your mom is anything like mine, she might tell you that being all together is the best gift a mom could ask for. And she is right (they always are...). Love is the best gift of all. So give her lots of love on this special day. Let's be honest, moms deserve it. Show her you love her and make her feel like the special lady she is.

Once that is said and done, a gift is just icing on the Mother's Day cake. While moms might not ask (or maybe she put in a special request), no mom is going to be upset that you took some time to buy her something thoughtful. Weather it is a new blouse for summer, a handbag she has been eyeing or a beautiful new shade of lipstick, here are a few ideas.

For the day....

Breakfast is always a way into my heart. Visit Smitten Kitchen for endless brunch ideas. My favorite is the Essential Raised Waffles (warning, batter needs to be prepared the night before) - but so worth it.

If sangria is more your mother's idea of an enjoyable afternoon, Cupcakes and Cashmere's Emily Schuman shows us how to create a beautiful sangria bar

Best from the Met Gala 2014

Considering the elegant theme of last night's Met Gala, as a tribute to one of the world's best couturier, Charles James, I expected more gowns and more elegance. Some fulfilled my expectations, while others took the rebellious route with short hemlines and on trend street styles like the crop top, which were nevertheless beautiful. Not always as Charles James as I imagined, but an amazing night for fashion (with a few misses).

Some of my favorites from the evening...

Blake Lively in a nude sequin Gucci dress. Stunning.

The only accessory that could make this evening look any better, is her handsome husband, Ryan Reynolds, in a velvet Gucci tux. Dreamy.

Queen Bey's best accessory/ status symbol?  The well dressed man whose sole job was to adjust her dress on the red carpet. Only Bey could get away with that.

Sarah Jessica Parker co chaired this year's Met Gala with Bradley Cooper and wore a custom made black and white Oscar de La Renta gown. A voluminous white skirt (nod to Charles James) with elegant embellished white gloves and a white flower adorned updo was glamorous perfection.

Sure there were some misses of the evening, but let's focus on all the amazing designs that graced the rep carpet at this year's Met Gala. What a fashion moment it was.

Met Ball 2014: Meet Charles James

The Met Ball is one of fashion's biggest nights of the year. As it should be, since it is celebrating the opening of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art's Fashion Exhibit. This year's exhibit is Charles James: Beyond Fashion. Anna Wintour will be hosting the $25,000 a ticket Costume Institute Gala, nicknamed the Met Ball.

While James may not be a household name, he is known in the fashion world as one of the most talented and influential couturiers. Iconic designer Cristobal Balenciaga has even described James as the "world's best and only dressmaker." Quite a statement coming from a man who was often referred to as the king of Haute Couture, himself.

James was a perfectionist in every aspect of his work. Always working with the best materials available, James created some of the most exquisite couture creations, complex in design and executed with extreme precision. He created three-dimensional and structured dresses using intricate cutting and exact seaming. Some gowns used 25 yards of fabric and weighed over 18 pounds.

Some highlights of his designs include his famous "Ribbon" dresses with a skirt made of ribbons that are six inches wide at the hem and and thinner at the waist (see below). The "Taxi" dress which was a simple wool wrap dress held together with hooks that was so easy to put on a woman could apparently do so in a taxi. James also created the first puffer jacket, lined with down and made of white silk satin, in 1937 which Salvador Dalí referred to as the first soft sculpture. This of course is only the beginning of his creations and accomplishments...

Famous clients of James include New York fashion icon Diana Vreeland, Austine Hearst and Coco Chanel.

While his brand did not survive (unfortunately James was a terrible businessman), his talent lives on in the work of designers who continue to be inspired by James.

With this years theme 'White Tie and Diamonds' one can only imagine the fashion splendor that is about to take over the Met Gala in just a few short hours. One of the most glamorous parties of the year celebrating one of fashion's most talented couturiers. I cannot wait to see what this evening of fashion brings us and to see Charles James: Beyond Fashion at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Up tomorrow... Some favorite looks of the night.

love,

Amy

The Annual Goop Closet Sale

If you, like me, are attempting to shop The Annual Goop Closet Sale, the website has temporarily crashed. This year celebs like Beyoncé, Miranda Kerr, and Kate Hudson are joining the cause and donating items from their closet. Keep trying! 100% of the Proceeds go to DonorsChoose, an organization that helps classrooms in need. Great shopping for a great cause. Good luck!

Weekend Getaway Packing: Palm Beach

After a quick visit to Palm Beach, I am back in Boston and longing for the sun on this rainy Spring day. For the sake of reminiscing,  and a quick guide for your next weekend beach getaway, here is a list of a few things I packed - no checked bag required.

Swimsuit, an easy cover-up and hat are a must. The Palm Beach sun is strong, so my pale complexion spent a lot of beach time hiding under an umbrella or hat. When you need a break from the heat, trade your cover-up for a bright pair of shorts and head over to Worth Avenue for some shopping or cool down with a cocktail at The Brazilian Court. For night, an easy & chic maxi is all you need to take you from dinner to after drinks (maybe at Cucina?). Throw in a pair of embellished sandals and some layering bracelets and you are set for a weekend away. All you need now is one last forever, take you anywhere bag from Artemis Design Co and you are good to go! May I suggest, The Weekender

On a closing note, don't forget the sunscreen! My favorite is MyChelle, which is one of the safest out there. You can purchase it at the best, and my favorite, natural skincare and beauty boutique, Follain. Stop by the Boston or Nantucket location or call the store to place an order. Your skin will thank you.

Bon Voyage!

Amy

Earth Day Edition

Today we celebrate Earth Day, the anniversary of what is widely considered the birth of the modern environmental movement. The hippie and flower-child consciousness and energy of the late sixties are to thank for this event (and let's not forget some amazing fashion moments). Forty four years later, hundreds of planned events are happening today around the world bringing awareness and education about environmental issues. These gatherings are meant to challenge people to think how they can transform the everyday to a more eco-friendly way of life.

Lucky for us, there are some amazing eco-friendly brands that are doing this everyday, without sacrificing fashion. Some of my favorites include Amour Vert, which brings Paris meets Cali styles in a mix of high low fashion. They even go the extra mile with their Buy A Tee, Plant A Tree program. So cool.

The People's Movement is another favorite as they fight against single use plastic one pair of fashionable footwear at a time. Alternative also makes the list and some amazing easy pieces for Spring & Summer. Their take on maxi dresses, skirts and tees are all worth checking out.

Now that you have some eco-friendly lines to shop, let's not forget to finish the look with my absolute favorite brand of makeup, RMS. Founded by the oh so talented Rose-Marie Swift, this makeup line is not only made from organic ingredients, but ingredients that will nourish and heal your skin while they work. Double duty! A few of my never leave the house without products can be found below.

If you are doing some shopping today, in the spirit of Earth Day, keep these eco-friendly brands in mind. Check out some of my favorites below and Happy Earth Day!

Spring Fashion In Bloom

As I write my first post on this freezing mid spring day in Boston, flowers and warm weather are on my mind. I need spring! This is just ridiculous. So what better to distract myself from the lingering cold then to focus on all of the amazing florals the Spring 2014 collections bring us! Designers really embraced everything floral this year and the new prints are quite refreshing. Dresses, shoes, shorts, you name it and someone has done it in a floral print.

Some of my favorites are the floral prints with a modern twist when paired with mesh or when they make an appearance in the bomber jacket. Florals are no longer just for your garden party, they are everywhere and I hope stay a while. And speaking of garden parties, these prints can at least help me pretend to be lounging in some secret garden or frolicking in a field of flowers like the girls below. Kind of jealous...

So here are some of my favorites florals of the season and where you can buy them, now! And if you aren't wearing florals, you can at least frolic and lounge amongst them and still look good. Hope this gets you through this not so warm spring day. Enjoy!

Amy
